Every new store needs two basic pieces of internet plumbing before taking its first order: a custom domain name that customers trust, and a matching business email address for order receipts and customer support.
Sending receipts from a personal @gmail.com address or leaving your storefront on a platform subdomain makes a brand look unfinished. This guide breaks down what domain registration and business email cost over three years, how to connect your domain to an ecommerce platform, and how to configure email authentication so your messages reach the inbox.
Worked example: 3-year domain and email costs for a new store
Domain registrars often advertise low introductory rates for the first year, but the long-term bill depends on renewals and whether privacy is included.
Below are two hypothetical setups for a new store comparing 3-year costs across three registrar and email approaches. All vendor rates come from official documentation checked on 2026-10-03.
Store A: Solo founder with 1 mailbox
Store A sells custom prints. The owner registers a .com domain and needs one professional inbox (hello@mystore.com) for customer questions.
Here is the 3-year cost comparison across three options:
- Option 1: Cloudflare Registrar + Free Email Routing. Cloudflare charges zero markup over wholesale registry fees, includes free WHOIS redaction, and has no renewal markup. We add the mandatory $0.20 annual ICANN fee ($0.60 over 3 years). With free email routing, inbound emails forward to a personal inbox at $0 extra.
- Option 2: Namecheap + Private Email Launch. Namecheap includes free domain privacy. Standard .com renewal generally ranges between $15.88 and $18.68/year plus the $0.20 ICANN fee. Over 3 years that is $47.64 to $56.04 (3 × $15.88 to 3 × $18.68), plus $0.60 in ICANN fees: $48.24 to $56.64. Private Email Launch costs $14.88/year for 1 mailbox ($44.64 over 3 years).
- Option 3: Hostinger standalone domain + Namecheap Private Email Launch. Hostinger standalone
.comregistration starts at $0.01 for year one when buying a 3-year term, then renews at $19.99/year for years two and three, with free WHOIS privacy included. Domain total: $0.01 + $19.99 + $19.99 = $39.99. Private Email Launch adds $44.64 over 3 years ($14.88 × 3).
| Setup (1 mailbox) | Domain (3 years) | Email (3 years) | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare + Email Routing | Wholesale + $0.60 ICANN | $0 (forwarding only) | Wholesale + $0.60 |
| Hostinger + Namecheap Launch | $39.99 ($0.01 + 2 × $19.99) | $44.64 (3 × $14.88) | $84.63 |
| Namecheap Domain + Launch | $48.24 to $56.64 (incl. ICANN) | $44.64 (3 × $14.88) | $92.88 to $101.28 |
Store B: Growing shop with 3 team mailboxes
Store B has two partners and one support inbox (alex@, jordan@, and support@mystore.com).
Comparing the same domain setups with email scaled to 3 mailboxes:
- Option 1: Cloudflare + Namecheap Private Email Expand. Expand includes 3 mailboxes and 30 GB storage at $41.88/year ($125.64 over 3 years).
- Option 2: Hostinger standalone domain + Namecheap Private Email Expand. Domain costs $39.99 on the 3-year term ($0.01 year one, then $19.99/year renewals). Expand email costs $125.64 ($41.88 × 3). Total: $165.63.
- Option 3: Hostinger Premium web hosting (for WooCommerce). If the store runs on WooCommerce, Hostinger Premium web hosting costs $2.99/month on a 48-month commitment ($143.52 upfront), and includes a free domain for 1 year and 2 mailboxes for 1 year. After year one, the domain renews at $19.99/year.
| Setup (3 mailboxes) | Domain (3 years) | Email (3 years) | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare + Namecheap Expand | Wholesale + $0.60 ICANN | $125.64 (3 × $41.88) | Wholesale + $126.24 |
| Hostinger domain + Namecheap Expand | $39.99 ($0.01 + 2 × $19.99) | $125.64 (3 × $41.88) | $165.63 |
| Namecheap domain + Expand | $48.24 to $56.64 (incl. ICANN) | $125.64 (3 × $41.88) | $173.88 to $182.28 |
Run it with your own numbers: total 3-year cost = (year 1 domain fee) + (2 × domain renewal fee) + (3 × annual ICANN fee of $0.20) + (3 × annual mailbox cost). When planning your store budget, track fixed monthly costs and use the profit per order calculator to see how order fees impact margins. For overall software bills, read our monthly cost guide.
Step 1: Check trademark availability before you register
Before spending money on a domain, check that your store name does not conflict with existing trademarks. Registering a domain name does not grant trademark rights.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) maintains the federal trademark database. A clearance search confirms your mark is available for your goods or services and avoids conflict with registered marks.
To run a clearance search on uspto.gov:
- Search your store name, misspellings, and phonetic matches.
- Review goods and services classes (like Class 25 for apparel or Class 35 for retail).
- If using a logo, search USPTO design search codes.
Skipping this check risks receiving a cease-and-desist letter after launch. For more legal setup details, review our business basics guide.
Step 2: Choose your registrar and register your domain
A domain registrar manages the reservation of your internet domain name. Check renewal rates and privacy protection before buying.
Watch the renewal jump
Registrars frequently discount year one:
- Cloudflare Registrar: Charges zero markup over wholesale registry and ICANN fees on registration and renewals.
- Hostinger: Standalone
.comstarts at $0.01 for year one with a 3-year commitment, renewing at $19.99/year. - Namecheap: Promotional first-year
.comrates are discounted. Renewals range between $15.88 and $18.68/year plus the $0.20 ICANN fee.
See our guide to the best domain registrar for an online store.
Ensure free WHOIS privacy
Every domain registration requires owner contact details. Unredacted records expose your phone, address, and email to spam.
- Namecheap includes free domain privacy with Withheld for Privacy.
- Cloudflare includes free WHOIS redaction by default.
- Hostinger includes free WHOIS privacy with no extra checkout fee.
Step 3: Connect your domain to your ecommerce store
Once you buy your domain, connect it to your ecommerce platform with DNS records in your registrar dashboard.
Connecting to Shopify
Configure three records in your registrar or DNS provider dashboard:
- Root domain A record: Host
@, Value23.227.38.65. - Root domain AAAA record: Host
@, Value2620:0127:f00f:5::(or2620:0127:f00f:0005:0000:0000:0000:0000). - Subdomain CNAME record: Host
www, Destinationshops.myshopify.com.(with trailing dot).
Shopify allows only one A record and one www CNAME record pointing to your storefront; delete any placeholder registrar records first. DNS changes can take from a few minutes up to 48 hours to propagate. For platform costs, see Shopify pricing explained.
Connecting to Squarespace or Wix
Squarespace and Wix include a free domain for the first year on annual plans:
- Squarespace annual plans include one free year of domain registration. See Squarespace pricing explained.
- Wix includes a free domain for one year on select paid plans. See Wix pricing explained.
You can also connect outside domains by adding the CNAME and A records from your site settings. To compare builders, see our Shopify vs Squarespace vs Wix guide.
Step 4: Pick a business email solution
Customer service emails like orders@yourstore.com look professional and protect sender reputation. Choose the setup that matches your team size:
Free email routing (Cloudflare)
Cloudflare does not provide hosted webmail inboxes, but offers free email routing. Inbound emails sent to your domain forward directly to an existing personal address (like Gmail). This option costs $0, but you cannot send outbound emails from that custom address via SMTP.
Budget mailboxes (Namecheap Private Email)
Namecheap provides standalone email hosting on three tiers, all with a 30-day free trial, IMAP/POP3/SMTP support, calendar tools, two-factor authentication, and an hourly sending limit of 500 emails per mailbox on paid accounts:
- Launch: 1 mailbox, 5 GB storage, $14.88/year (additional mailboxes $8.88/year each).
- Expand: 3 mailboxes, 30 GB storage, $41.88/year (additional mailboxes $25.88/year each).
- Scale: 5 mailboxes, 75 GB storage, $71.88/year (additional mailboxes $39.88/year each).
Workspace suites (Google Workspace)
Google Workspace provides full Gmail functionality on your custom domain, along with shared drive storage and admin controls. A single MX record pointing to smtp.google.com handles routing.
Hosting-bundled email (Hostinger)
If you run WooCommerce on WordPress, Hostinger’s Premium web hosting plan ($2.99/month on a 48-month term) bundles 2 mailboxes per website free for the first year, supporting up to 3 websites and 20 GB SSD storage with weekly backups. To decide between WordPress and hosted platforms, see Shopify vs WooCommerce.
Step 5: Configure MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication
To ensure order confirmations and marketing messages reach customer inboxes, configure email authentication in your DNS settings.
MX records (Incoming mail)
Mail Exchange (MX) records tell other servers where to deliver inbound mail for your domain. For Google Workspace, add:
- Type:
MX - Host:
@ - Destination:
smtp.google.com - Priority:
1
If using Namecheap Private Email or Hostinger, enter the hostnames provided in their account dashboard.
SPF records (Authorized senders)
Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is a TXT record listing authorized sending servers.
- Google Workspace SPF record:
v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all
If your store sends automated order confirmations through Shopify and support replies through Google Workspace, combine them into a single record. A domain must have only one SPF TXT record:
- Combined record:
v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:shops.shopify.com ~all
Google documentation notes an SPF record can contain up to 10 include: mechanisms before exceeding lookup limits.
DKIM records (Cryptographic signature)
DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) adds a digital cryptographic signature to outgoing messages. Receiving servers verify this signature against a public key published in your DNS.
- Generate a DKIM key pair in your email provider console.
- Add a TXT record at
<selector>._domainkey(such asgoogle._domainkey). - Enter the public key string (starting with
v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=...) as the record value. - Turn on signing in your admin console once DNS propagates.
DMARC records (Policy enforcement)
Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC) tells recipient servers how to handle messages failing SPF or DKIM checks. Adding a basic DMARC TXT record at _dmarc.yourstore.com ensures compliant delivery.

When to pick something else
- If you only sell on marketplaces: If you sell strictly on Etsy or Amazon, you do not need a custom domain or email hosting yet. See our comparison on selling on Etsy, Amazon, or your own store.
- If you want an all-in-one bundle: If managing DNS records feels overwhelming, buying your domain directly through Shopify simplifies connection. Every Shopify store starts with a
myshopify.comURL and allows buying a custom domain in-platform. Alternatively, taking the 1-year free domain included with annual Squarespace or Wix plans keeps billing under one roof. - If you need advanced email marketing: A business mailbox handles one-on-one customer replies. For bulk newsletters and automated flows, use dedicated email tools. Shopify Email includes 10,000 free emails a month ($1 per 1,000 after that), MailerLite has a free tier for up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails, and Omnisend offers a free tier for 250 contacts. Compare options in our review of best email marketing tools.
Common domain and email mistakes
- Ignoring multi-year renewal prices: Choosing a registrar based on a 1¢ or 99¢ promo price without checking whether renewals jump to $20/year or higher.
- Paying for domain privacy: Buying WHOIS privacy as a paid add-on when registrars like Cloudflare, Namecheap, and Hostinger provide it free.
- Publishing multiple SPF records: Adding separate TXT records for Shopify, Google Workspace, and your email marketing tool. This breaks SPF validation. Combine all senders into a single TXT string.
- Leaving conflicting DNS records active: Leaving placeholder registrar A records active when pointing your domain to Shopify, causing connection errors and SSL certificate failures.
- Skipping trademark verification: Buying a domain before checking the USPTO database, risking trademark infringement claims and forced rebranding.
What to do this week: a 5-step checklist
- Clear your store name: Search your business name and phonetic variations on the USPTO trademark database at
uspto.gov. - Register your domain: Buy your
.comaddress through Cloudflare Registrar for wholesale pricing, or Namecheap with free domain privacy. - Configure store DNS: Add your platform records. For Shopify, set your root A record to
23.227.38.65, AAAA to2620:0127:f00f:5::, and www CNAME toshops.myshopify.com.. Delete conflicting records. - Activate your mailbox: Set up a forwarding address through Cloudflare for $0, or create a mailbox with Namecheap Private Email Launch ($14.88/year) or Google Workspace.
- Authenticate your DNS: Add your MX record (
smtp.google.comfor Google Workspace), publish your combined SPF TXT record, and add your DKIM public key TXT record. Send a test email to verify delivery.
