Buy your domain name from an independent registrar instead of locking it to your ecommerce platform. You get lower annual renewals, full ownership if you ever move your store, and cheaper business email. The worked example below compares 3-year registration and business email costs across typical store setups so you know what you will spend before you enter a credit card.
Three registrars compared
Every registrar in this comparison includes free domain privacy protection, masking your name, phone number, and street address from public databases.
| Registrar | Standard .com pricing model | WHOIS privacy | Business email option | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Registrar | Wholesale registry fee + $0.20 ICANN fee (zero markup) | Free WHOIS redaction | Free email routing (forwarding only; no mailboxes) | Lowest ongoing renewal cost |
| Namecheap | Promotional first year, then standard renewal ($15.88–$18.68/yr + $0.20 ICANN fee) | Free (Withheld for Privacy) | Private Email ($14.88/yr for 1 mailbox, $41.88/yr for 3) | Standalone domain + low-cost mailbox |
| Hostinger | $0.01 first year (with 3-yr term) or free with hosting; renews at $19.99/yr | Free by default | 2 mailboxes included for 1 year on Premium hosting | Bundled WordPress/WooCommerce hosting |
Worked example: 3-year domain and email costs for a new store
These two setups are hypothetical; prices were checked on 2026-10-03. Year-one prices mislead, so compare three years.
Store A: Solo founder needing 1 domain and 1 mailbox
Store A sells custom apparel on Shopify Basic ($29/month on yearly billing). The founder needs one .com domain and one business mailbox (hello@mystore.com) to answer customer questions and send order confirmations.
We compare three paths over a 3-year term:
- Cloudflare Registrar + free email forwarding: Cloudflare sells
.comdomains at wholesale cost with zero markup and $0.20 ICANN fee. The live wholesale price is viewable in the dashboard. Forwarding inbound emails to personal Gmail is $0. - Namecheap standalone domain + Private Email Launch: Standard .com renewal generally ranges between $15.88 and $18.68 per year plus $0.20 ICANN fee (exact dynamic price shown in cart). Three years of the domain cost $48.24 to $56.64 (3 × $15.88 to 3 × $18.68, plus 3 × $0.20 ICANN). Private Email Launch is $14.88 a year for 1 mailbox with 5 GB storage, so three years of email cost $44.64. Total 3-year cost: $92.88 to $101.28, about $2.58 to $2.81 a month.
- Hostinger standalone domain: A standalone
.comis $0.01 for year one when buying a 3-year term, and renews at $19.99 a year. Domain cost for 3 years is $0.01 + $19.99 + $19.99 = $39.99 ($13.33 a year on average). Adding external email requires an outside service.
| 3-Year solo setup | Domain (3 years) | Email (3 years, 1 box) | 3-year total | Monthly equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare + Email Routing | Wholesale price + $0.60 ICANN | $0 (inbound forwarding) | Wholesale + $0.60 | Shown in your Cloudflare dashboard |
| Namecheap + Private Email | $48.24 to $56.64 | $44.64 ($14.88/yr) | $92.88 to $101.28 | $2.58 to $2.81/mo |
| Hostinger standalone | $39.99 | Separate provider | $39.99 + email | $1.11/mo + email |
Store B: Small team needing 1 domain and 3 mailboxes
Store B has three partners managing support, orders, and wholesale. They need three dedicated mailboxes (support@, orders@, alex@).
- Namecheap Private Email Expand: Includes 3 mailboxes and 30 GB storage for $41.88 a year. Over 3 years, email is $125.64 ($41.88 × 3). Adding $48.24 to $56.64 for 3 years of the domain gives $173.88 to $182.28 in total, about $4.83 to $5.06 a month.
- Hostinger Premium web hosting (for WooCommerce): If Store B chooses self-hosted WooCommerce instead of Shopify, Hostinger’s Premium plan costs $2.99 a month on a 48-month commitment ($143.52 upfront, regular price $575.52). It includes 1 free domain for year one and 2 mailboxes free for year one, supporting up to 3 websites and 20 GB SSD storage. For year two and three, domain renewal is $19.99/year.
Run it with your own numbers: first-year domain price + 2 × renewal price + 3 × ICANN fee + 3 × your email plan’s yearly price (a plan like Expand covers 3 mailboxes for one price). Check our profit per order calculator to see how domain and email overhead fit alongside your card processing and product margins. For the rest of your startup budget, check the monthly cost guide.
Cloudflare Registrar: best for at-cost renewals and DNS
Cloudflare operates an at-cost domain registrar with zero markup over registry and ICANN fees.
Pricing and zero markup
Most domain registrars use introductory teaser rates to win customers, then raise prices on renewal. Cloudflare charges the exact wholesale price charged by top-level domain registries plus the mandatory $0.20 ICANN annual fee. There are no renewal markups, no hidden upsells at checkout, and no price increases other than registry fee changes.
Security and privacy included
Every Cloudflare domain includes:
- Free WHOIS redaction: Masks personal contact information from public registry directories to block spam and unwanted exposure.
- Free one-click DNSSEC: Cryptographic validation that prevents DNS hijacking and spoofing.
- Domain locking by default: Shields your domain against unauthorized transfers.
- Cloudflare Anycast DNS and CDN: High-speed, DDoS-resilient name servers.
Email capabilities
Cloudflare does not offer hosted webmail inboxes. Instead, it provides free Email Routing. You can create custom addresses (like orders@mystore.com) and forward them directly to an existing personal Gmail, Outlook, or iCloud inbox. If you only need to receive inquiries from shoppers, this costs $0. If you need to send replies from your custom domain via dedicated SMTP, you must pair Cloudflare with an external email provider.
Trade-offs
Cloudflare Registrar requires your domain to use Cloudflare authoritative nameservers. You cannot point nameservers to third-party hosts; all DNS records must be configured in Cloudflare’s dashboard.
Namecheap: best for standalone domains with affordable email
Namecheap offers independent domain registration alongside inexpensive hosted mailboxes without requiring website hosting.
Pricing and renewals
Namecheap uses promotional first-year rates that adjust via promo codes at checkout. Standard .com renewal rates generally range between $15.88 and $18.68 per year plus the $0.20 ICANN fee, with the exact renewal price shown in your cart and dashboard.
Free domain privacy
Namecheap includes free domain privacy protection (in partnership with Withheld for Privacy) for all eligible domain registrations, transfers, and renewals. It masks your personal name, street address, email, and phone number from public WHOIS lookups.
Private Email plans
If you want dedicated mailboxes without paying for full server hosting, Namecheap provides standalone Private Email:
- Launch: 1 mailbox, 5 GB storage, $14.88/year. Extra mailboxes cost $8.88/year each.
- Expand: 3 mailboxes, 30 GB storage, $41.88/year. Extra mailboxes cost $25.88/year each.
- Scale: 5 mailboxes, 75 GB storage, $71.88/year. Extra mailboxes cost $39.88/year each.
All paid plans include a 30-day free trial, support IMAP, POP3, and SMTP, provide webmail and calendar tools, allow up to 500 emails per hour per mailbox, and include two-factor authentication (2FA).
Trade-offs
Standard renewals at $15.88 to $18.68 per year are higher than at-cost wholesale registrars. However, the convenience of managing both your domain and low-cost business mailboxes in a single dashboard makes it very practical for solo founders.
Hostinger: best for all-in-one WordPress and WooCommerce hosting
Hostinger is an accredited registrar and hosting provider best suited for founders building a self-hosted WooCommerce store.
Domain pricing
Hostinger sells standalone .com registrations starting at $0.01 for the first year when purchasing a 3-year term. After the first year, standard renewal is $19.99 per year. Free WHOIS privacy protection is included by default.
Premium web hosting bundle
If you run WooCommerce on WordPress, you must provide your own web hosting. Hostinger’s Premium plan costs $2.99 per month on a 48-month term ($143.52 upfront, regular price $575.52) and renews at $10.99 per month. It includes:
- Free domain name for 1 year.
- 2 mailboxes per website free for 1 year.
- Support for up to 3 websites, 20 GB SSD storage, free weekly backups, and 24/7 support.
- 30-day money-back guarantee.
Trade-offs
If you use a hosted ecommerce platform like Shopify, Wix, or Squarespace, Hostinger’s hosting plan is unnecessary because your platform already includes web hosting. As a standalone registrar, Hostinger’s $19.99/year renewal rate is higher than Namecheap and Cloudflare.
Connecting your domain to your store
Connecting a domain from an independent registrar to your ecommerce platform requires adding two DNS records in your registrar dashboard.
Connecting to Shopify
According to Shopify’s manual domain setup documentation:
- In your registrar DNS settings, point the root domain (
@) A record to Shopify’s IPv4 address:23.227.38.65. - Optional: Point the root domain (
@) AAAA record to Shopify’s IPv6 address:2620:0127:f00f:5::. - Point the
wwwCNAME record toshops.myshopify.com.(include the trailing dot if supported). - Delete any conflicting A or CNAME records. A domain can only have one root A record and one www CNAME pointing to your storefront.
DNS updates can take from a few minutes up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide. Shopify Support cannot access third-party registrar accounts, so keep your login credentials handy.
Connecting email DNS records
When you set up a business mailbox (like Google Workspace or Namecheap Private Email), you must add authentication records to your registrar’s DNS:
- MX records: Direct incoming messages to your mail server (for example, Google Workspace uses
smtp.google.comwith Priority 1). - SPF record: A TXT record listing authorized sending servers (such as
v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all). If sending from both Google and Shopify, combine them into a single TXT record:v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:shops.shopify.com ~all(maximum of 10 include tags permitted). - DKIM: A public key TXT record with a designated selector that adds a cryptographic signature to verify your outgoing emails.
- DMARC: Specifies how recipient mail servers handle messages failing SPF or DKIM checks.
For a complete step-by-step walkthrough on email records, read our guide to domain and business email setup.
Should you buy your domain through your store platform?
Platforms like Shopify, Squarespace, and Wix allow you to register a domain directly through their admin panel. Squarespace includes a free domain for one year on annual plans, and Wix includes a free domain for one year on select paid plans. Shopify plans give you a free myshopify.com domain and allow you to buy or connect a custom domain.
Buying through your store platform offers one advantage: automatic DNS configuration. The platform connects your storefront and provisions SSL certificates without touching DNS tables.
However, using an independent registrar gives you three major benefits:
- Store portability: If you ever outgrow your platform or migrate (for example, moving from Squarespace to Shopify), your domain stays intact. You simply change the DNS A record instead of transferring the domain between registrars.
- Cheaper renewals: Store platforms often charge higher domain renewals year after year compared to independent registrars.
- Dedicated email flexibility: Ecommerce platforms do not operate dedicated mailbox hosting. Keeping your domain at an independent registrar like Namecheap lets you run affordable mailboxes on the same bill.
Who should pick something else
- Do not choose Cloudflare Registrar if you need an all-in-one webmail inbox and refuse to configure external email settings. Cloudflare provides free forwarding, but not native mailboxes.
- Do not choose Hostinger if you sell on Shopify, Squarespace, or Wix. You would be paying for shared hosting resources that your SaaS platform already provides.
- Do not choose Namecheap if your single goal is paying the rock-bottom wholesale renewal price over 5 to 10 years without ever needing an add-on mailbox. Cloudflare’s zero-markup model wins on pure domain renewal costs.
Common mistakes when buying a domain
- Forgetting to check the renewal price: Registrars advertise $0.01 or $0.99 teaser prices for year one, but regular renewals jump to $16 to $20+ per year. Always verify the renewal price before completing checkout.
- Paying for WHOIS privacy: Some registrars still charge $10 to $15 per year for privacy protection. Never pay extra for WHOIS privacy; Namecheap, Cloudflare, and Hostinger include it free.
- Creating duplicate SPF records: Adding multiple separate SPF TXT records breaks email authentication. Combine multiple mail sources into one record using
include:tags. - Skipping trademark verification: Before buying a domain, search the USPTO Federal Trademark Search system to verify that your chosen brand name does not conflict with existing registered trademarks or pending applications for your goods or services.
- Leaving conflicting DNS records active: When pointing your domain to Shopify, failing to delete old parking A records prevents SSL certificate issuance and causes connection errors.
What to do this week
- Search your store name: Check domain availability and run a quick search on the USPTO Federal Trademark Search database to confirm your brand name is clear.
- Choose your registrar:
- Pick Cloudflare Registrar if you want zero-markup renewals and plan to forward email to your personal inbox.
- Pick Namecheap if you want an independent domain bundled with a $14.88/year Private Email mailbox.
- Pick Hostinger if you are launching an open-source store on WooCommerce and need web hosting.
- Register the domain: Ensure free WHOIS privacy is turned on during checkout.
- Connect to your store: Log into your store dashboard, enter your custom domain, and copy the A and CNAME records into your registrar’s DNS manager.
- Set up business email: Configure your MX, SPF, and DKIM records so customer receipts and support messages land safely in inboxes. Check our launch checklist to verify your domain and payments before opening.
