The right platform comes down to whether you want a dedicated sales engine, a website that also sells, or full control over your server and code. For most first-time store owners selling physical goods, Shopify Basic and Squarespace Core lead the hosted options at $29 a month on yearly billing, while WooCommerce gives you self-hosted ownership on WordPress with no monthly software fee. The breakdown below compares total monthly costs across small and growing sales volumes, highlights key fee differences, and outlines exactly which option fits your business model.

Worked example: monthly costs at 30 and 150 orders
These two stores are hypothetical, but all rates come from the official source tables. Both sell a $40 product where every customer pays with a standard domestic card through the platform’s native payment system. Subscriptions reflect yearly billing terms.
Store A: starting out with 30 orders a month ($1,200 in gross sales)
Standard card processing across Shopify Payments Basic, Squarespace Payments Core, and WooPayments runs at 2.9% + 30¢. The processing cost is 2.9% of $1,200 ($34.80) plus 30¢ × 30 orders ($9.00), which equals $43.80 in card fees.
| Platform and plan | Fixed plan + card fees + store fee | Month total |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic | $29.00 + $43.80 + $0 | $72.80 |
| Squarespace Basic | $19.00 + $43.80 + $24.00 (2%) | $86.80 |
| Squarespace Core | $29.00 + $43.80 + $0 | $72.80 |
| WooCommerce (Hostinger promo) | $2.99 + $43.80 + $0 | $46.79 |
| WooCommerce (Hostinger renewal) | $10.99 + $43.80 + $0 | $54.79 |
Squarespace Basic looks $10 cheaper than Core on paper, but ends up $14 dearer ($86.80 versus $72.80) because the 2% store fee adds $24.00 on $1,200 of sales. The math yields a clear rule of thumb: once your online sales exceed $500 a month ($10 difference divided by 2%), Squarespace Core is cheaper than Basic. Below $500 in monthly sales, Basic wins on price.
WooCommerce on Hostinger Premium web hosting ($2.99 a month when paid as $143.52 upfront for 48 months, renewing at $10.99 a month) offers the lowest cash expense at $46.79 to $54.79. However, that $18 to $26 monthly cash saving requires you to install WordPress and manage updates yourself.
Store B: the store growing to 150 orders a month ($6,000 in gross sales)
At 150 orders of $40, gross sales reach $6,000. At the standard 2.9% + 30¢ rate, card fees are 2.9% of $6,000 ($174.00) plus 30¢ × 150 orders ($45.00), equaling $219.00.
If you move to a higher tier with a 2.7% + 30¢ card rate (Shopify Grow at $79 a month or Squarespace Plus at $49 a month), card fees become 2.7% of $6,000 ($162.00) plus 30¢ × 150 orders ($45.00), equaling $207.00.
| Platform and plan (card rate) | Plan cost + card fees | Month total |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic (2.9% + 30¢) | $29.00 + $219.00 | $248.00 |
| Shopify Grow (2.7% + 30¢) | $79.00 + $207.00 | $286.00 |
| Squarespace Core (2.9% + 30¢) | $29.00 + $219.00 | $248.00 |
| Squarespace Plus (2.7% + 30¢) | $49.00 + $207.00 | $256.00 |
| WooCommerce (Hostinger renewal) | $10.99 + $219.00 | $229.99 |
Even at $6,000 in monthly volume, upgrading purely to reduce card fees loses money. On Shopify, Grow saves you $12 in processing fees ($219.00 minus $207.00) but adds $50 to the monthly subscription, leaving you $38 worse off each month. On Squarespace, Plus saves $12 on fees but costs $20 more in subscription, leaving you $8 behind.
Upgrade tiers only when you specifically require higher-tier functionality like staff permissions or professional shipping tools. The 0.2 percentage point card savings alone only covers the higher plan cost at these monthly sales thresholds:
| Upgrade path | Extra plan price | Card rate saving | Pays off from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squarespace Core to Plus | $20/mo | 0.2% | about $10,000/mo |
| Squarespace Core to Advanced | $70/mo | 0.4% | about $17,500/mo |
| Shopify Basic to Grow | $50/mo | 0.2% | about $25,000/mo |
| Shopify Basic to Advanced | $270/mo | 0.4% | about $67,500/mo |
Run it with your own numbers: monthly plan or hosting fee + (monthly sales × card fee %) + (order count × 30¢) + platform store fees. Model this per order with our profit per order calculator. For full annual budget planning, see our monthly cost guide.
Shopify: for dedicated stores that plan to scale
Shopify structures its core offerings across three plans: Basic ($29 a month billed yearly, or $39 monthly), Grow ($79 yearly, $105 monthly), and Advanced ($299 yearly, $399 monthly). Every plan includes unlimited web hosting, an SSL certificate, a custom domain connection, unlimited products, abandoned checkout recovery, gift cards, and automated sales tax calculation. Built-in fraud analysis is provided when you process payments through Shopify Payments.
Shopify fits best when selling products online and in person is your primary business objective. In-person card payments cost 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic, and POS Pro, listed for physical storefronts, is an $89 a month add-on per location. If you expand your team, the Grow plan adds up to 5 staff accounts, while Advanced allows up to 15. The Shopify App Store lists thousands of integrations for specialized workflows, though app subscriptions can raise your monthly overhead quickly. Our guide to cutting store app subscriptions details how to audit these add-ons.
New accounts can test the software through an introductory promotion: 3 days free, followed by $1 a month for the first 3 months. For full plan features, read our guide to Shopify pricing explained.
Squarespace: for design-focused websites that also sell
Squarespace organizes its platform around four tiers: Basic ($19 a month billed yearly, or $25 monthly), Core ($29 yearly, $39 monthly), Plus ($49 yearly, $65 monthly), and Advanced ($99 yearly, $139 monthly). Paying annually saves up to 36% compared to month-to-month billing and includes a free custom domain for the first year. Every tier supports selling unlimited physical and digital products, customer accounts, gift cards, abandoned cart recovery, and recurring subscriptions.
Squarespace suits businesses where the website matters as much as the checkout: a photographer selling prints, a coach selling sessions, a café with a menu and a shop. Transaction fees vary across plans:
| Fee category | Basic | Core | Plus | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online store transaction fee | 2% | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| Digital content and memberships fee | 7% | 5% | 1% | 0% |
| Standard card rate (Squarespace Payments) | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.7% + 30¢ | 2.5% + 30¢ |
| Team contributors allowed | Up to 2 | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Basic permits up to 2 contributors; Core and higher plans allow unlimited site editors. Point of Sale payments are supported in the US and UK. Advanced shipping tools, real-time carrier calculations, and automated taxes appear on upper plans. See our full breakdown in Squarespace pricing explained.
WooCommerce: for WordPress owners who want zero platform fees
WooCommerce is an open-source plugin built on WordPress. The core plugin download is free, and woocommerce.com documents that the platform charges zero monthly platform fees. WooCommerce.com says you fully own your site, code and data.
However, zero platform fee does not mean zero cost. You purchase and configure your own WordPress hosting. Hostinger lists its Premium web hosting plan at $2.99 a month on a 48-month commitment ($143.52 paid upfront), which renews at $10.99 a month and includes a free domain for the first year. Standard .com renewals cost $19.99 a year. For payment processing, WooPayments charges a pay-as-you-go US card rate of 2.90% + 30¢ with no monthly gateway fee. Customer dispute fees are $15.00, which are refunded automatically if you dispute and win.
The real trade-off with WooCommerce is maintenance responsibility. WooCommerce documents specific server requirements: WordPress 6.9 or greater, PHP 8.3 or greater, MySQL 8.0 or greater (or MariaDB 10.6 or greater), HTTPS support, and a WordPress memory limit of 256 MB or greater. WooCommerce warns that servers failing to meet these standards may introduce security vulnerabilities and poor performance. You are responsible for scheduling regular backups, testing extension updates, and troubleshooting PHP conflicts. For a direct head-to-head comparison, read Shopify vs WooCommerce.
Wix: for building visually before committing cash
Wix offers Free, Light, Core, Business, and Business Elite plans. A free site lets you design pages and list products, but accepting customer payments requires upgrading to a paid plan. Paid packages include web hosting, custom domain connection, and 24/7 support, with a 14-day money-back guarantee on initial upgrades.
Wix sets plan prices by country and shows the price for your country at checkout. Wix Payments processes cards and digital wallets like Apple Pay, or you can connect with over 70 third-party payment providers.
Its store features include digital products, subscriptions, print on demand, dropshipping and selling on Google, eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok from one dashboard. Wix fits creators who want to build and organize a catalog before spending money. Learn more in Wix pricing explained.
Who should pick something else
- Fewer than 10 orders a month. Paying $29 a month for a hosted platform is an unnecessary fixed drag on early cash flow. Start on a marketplace like Etsy or Amazon where fees are strictly per sale. See Etsy, Amazon or your own store.
- Founders wanting zero technical tasks. If database setups, error logs, and update conflicts sound stressful, avoid WooCommerce. Pick Shopify Basic or Squarespace Core.
- Physical storefronts needing counter registers. If you run a permanent shop counter, Shopify lists in-person card rates on every plan (2.6% + 10¢ on Basic) and a POS Pro add-on for physical storefronts at $89 a month per location.
- Sellers of regulated or restricted products. Check each platform’s terms and its payment provider’s rules before you build, because a payment account can be refused after launch.
Common mistakes when choosing a platform
- Looking only at software subscriptions. Calling WooCommerce free ignores hosting fees, domain renewals, premium extensions, and maintenance time.
- Staying on Squarespace Basic past $500 a month. Basic’s 2% transaction fee outcosts the $10 upgrade to Core as soon as monthly sales pass $500.
- Upgrading plans early for lower card rates. In the example above, paying $50 more for Shopify Grow saves only $12 on $6,000 in sales. You need $25,000 in monthly sales before the lower card rate covers the upgrade.
- Connecting outside gateways to Shopify without checking fees. Using an outside gateway triggers an extra 2% fee on Basic on top of the gateway’s fee. Use Shopify Payments unless your products are restricted.
- Paying month-to-month on a long-term store. Paying yearly on Shopify Basic or Squarespace Core saves $120 a year ($348 versus $468).
How to decide in five steps
- Estimate your monthly orders and average order value. Run your numbers through the worked example formula above to calculate your platform bill.
- Choose your maintenance model. Pick Shopify, Squarespace, or Wix for managed hosting and security. Pick WooCommerce for full code ownership on WordPress.
- Match the platform to your primary business activity. Pick Shopify Basic for dedicated physical selling, Squarespace Core for a content/service site that also sells, and Wix to design first for free.
- Select the correct tier. On Squarespace, choose Basic only if sales stay under $500 a month; pick Core above that. On Shopify, stay on Basic until sales pass $25,000 a month or you need staff accounts.
- Place a live test order before paying annually. Use the trial period (14 days on Squarespace, 3 days plus $1/month on Shopify) to list five items and place a test order. Follow our launch checklist and how to open an online store.
